Marinated dates with proscuitto

This was originally called Hors d’Oeuvres Dates, which seemed like a pretty dull name for a really tasty appetizer. One of our friends, Steve Hulsizer, came up with a bastardization of the word hors d’oeuvres; he calls them “Horrors de Hoovers.” So if you don’t like my name, you can call them Horrors de Hoovers Dates.
Makes about 20 bite-sized appetizers.
2 T chili sauce
1 t Worcestershire sauce
2 T tarragon or wine vinegar
3 T olive oil
1 clove garlic, crushed
1 C pitted dates
1/4 lb sliced proscuitto ham
Combine the first 6 ingredients in a medium bowl. Toss with the dates, coating well. Cover and let stand for an hour or two at room temperature. Drain and reserve marinade.

Wrap each date in a slice of ham, folded in half so there are two layers of ham. Secure with a toothpick and brush with reserved marinade. Broil for 3-4 minutes. Serve hot with crackers.
