Southern Doughnuts

I remember when my mother pulled this recipe out of her cigar box collection and made doughnuts, with little me helping. It was probably the year before I went to kindergarten, because all my brothers and sisters were at school when we did it.

Butter, the size of an egg
1 C sugar
3 eggs, well-beaten
Flour to make stiff dough
2 t baking powder
Nutmeg to taste
1 C milk

Cream butter and sugar. Stir in eggs. Mix and sift dry ingredients and add alternately with milk. Cut into doughnuts. Fry in deep lard or substitute.
